Bradley & Hubbard began in 1852 as a small clock-making venture. It soon expanded and became a major force in the production of high-quality decorative metalwork. By the late 19th century, the company was producing a wide array of products including: Lamps and lighting fixtures (especially kerosene and early electric lamps), Clocks, Bookends, Andirons, and Fireplace accessories, Metal-mounted glass and mirror frames and numerous Architectural elements and ironwork. Their designs often reflected Victorian, Eastlake, Aesthetic, and later Art Nouveau styles, and they gained a reputation for both artistic merit and superb craftsmanship.
Bradley & Hubbard held over 230 patents, and their work was featured in major exhibitions, including the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. Their lighting fixtures, in particular, were prized for their design and quality and became staples in American homes and public buildings.By the early 20th century, the firm had grown significantly—employing over 1,500 workers and exporting worldwide.
Today, Bradley & Hubbard items are highly collectible and their works are also included in collections of institutions such as the Smithsonian Institution, highlighting their importance in American decorative arts history.
