Gerda Neubacher is a Canadian painter, designer and author whose work bridges fine art, portraiture, and decorative design. Born in Austria and educated in Switzerland, Neubacher trained in art and fashion design, disciplines that later shaped her distinctive sense of composition and form. After relocating to Canada along with her husband Fred, who was also of Austrian heritage and an artist, she established her practice north of Toronto, where she developed a career that has spanned several decades and multiple artistic media.
Neubacher’s art is characterized by an expressive balance of realism and idealization, reflecting both European design traditions and a sensitivity to personal narrative. Her portraits, landscapes, and figurative works are executed primarily in oil and tempera, often with a luminous, layered quality. Throughout her career, she has explored how identity, beauty, and emotional presence can be translated into visual form — a theme that culminated in her most recognized project, Portraits of Canadian Women Who Inspire (2013).
The Portraits of Canadian Women Who Inspire project began as a personal exploration into the nature of self-representation. Neubacher has recounted that the idea arose from a conversation with a woman who said that she had been painted many times, yet none of the portraits reflected how she truly saw herself. Inspired by this insight, Neubacher embarked on an ambitious series that eventually included interviews and portraits of more than 140 women from across Canada. The resulting 171-page book, published under her Pioneer House Gallery imprint, paired these portraits with the subjects’ own words, celebrating individuality and achievement. The project was supported in part by Scotia Bank and received national attention for its uplifting portrayal of women in art and society.
In conjunction with the book, Neubacher donated proceeds to charitable organizations such as the Canadian Women’s Foundation and Partners in Art, and presented talks and exhibitions promoting women’s creative visibility. The series continues to resonate as a uniquely Canadian statement on identity and collaboration, merging documentary insight with painterly interpretation.
Outside her portrait practice, Neubacher’s artistic output has included both fine and decorative art. In the 1980s, she designed porcelain figurines for the Franklin Mint, including a collectible Cinderella (1988) that reflected her enduring fascination with elegance and form. Her easel paintings, including the large tempera and oil work Wonderland (2014), have appeared in contemporary Canadian art auctions, and her pieces are held in private collections across the country.
Her work is often listed under the Postwar and Contemporary category, with recurring themes of imagination, grace, and transformation. Neubacher’s refined draftsmanship and eye for harmony reveal her early fashion design training, while her sensitive portrayals underscore her commitment to authenticity and emotional truth.
Though details of her early career remain less documented, Gerda Neubacher’s artistic journey represents a fusion of European craftsmanship and Canadian sensibility.
