George Édouard Tremblay, Canadian Artist

A Note of Interest: The subject matter of this hooked rug is somwhat unusual for Georges Édouard Tremblay, as he rarely ever incorporated human figures or animals, other than the occasional horse and sleigh in any of his hooked rugs. This hooked rug, even though it has some overall fading, can be considered a rare version of his work, and keep in mind that Georges did not produce his rugs in an assembly-line format. Georges never mass produced any of his hooked rugs, they were always completed one at a time by hand with an eye towards perfection and never quantity.

Georges Édouard Tremblay Bio Title

George Tremblay Bio Image Georges Tremblay was born in Baie-Saint-Paul, Quebec in 1902. He studied art at the l’École des Arts Domestiques de Quebec and in Pointe-au-Pic, Quebec. Working in wool and other fibres, he is best known for his landscape textile tapestries and hooked rugs. He also painted the Quebec landscape and genre in watercolours. Georges Tremblay and the noted Canadian artist Clarence Gagnon were friends and often collaborated on each others works.

Tremblay’s textile works were exhibited at the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec, the Royal York Hotel in Toronto, the International Museum of Philadelphia in the USA as well as in many other venues in Canada and the US. These rugs were sold in many parts of Quebec, Ontario, the Northern New England states and in New York City. Georges was certainly well known for his talents as an artist and for rug hooking in his hometown of Baie-Saint-Paul, Quebec, where after his passing the town named a street after him in his honour.

In the past decade Georges Tremblay’s hooked rugs have become especially sought after due to their high degree of artistic refinement and quality and continue to climb in value.

George Édouard passed away in 1987.
